Food intolerance or food sensitivity occurs when a person has difficulty digesting a particular food. Are caused by the partial or complete absence of activity of the enzymes responsible for breaking down or absorbing the food elements. These deficiencies are often innate.
For example, being allergic to milk is different from not being able to digest it properly because of lactose intolerance.
Food intolerances can often be difficult to diagnose. Some substances within foods, and the quantity (dose) of foods eaten, can increase the frequency and severity of symptoms. These include stomach pain, bloating, gas/flatulence, diarrhea, IBS, rashes, hives or headaches.
